4 Types of Stress

Stress is an unpleasant state of emotion and physiological arousal when people perceive a situation as dangerous or threatening to them and people around them. Different people may have different interpretation of stress as they may interpret it as event or situation that arose pressure, anger, feel of tension or negative emotion, threat of failure and personal humiliation. Another group of people may look at it as response towards situation or extreme fears associated to physical threat such as storms, flood, airplane crash, snake, illness and others. Stress has become a way of life in today's modern world as life is so busy and full of hassles, important deadlines, frustrations, high expectation from others, demands and not to forget is social and personal relationship.

Stress can be broken down into four different categories which are Eustress, Hyperstress, Hypostress, and Distress. Eustress is helpful types of stress as it affect human being in a positive way. This kind of stress took place at important event that bring happiness and motivation towards oneself that inspired a person to do her best and push her to achieve success in life. Eustress is also applies to creative endeavor where muscles, heart and mind for the strength needed are prepared for anything that is going to occur. Example of events which create eustress is marriage, giving birth to a baby, job interview, getting a promotion and athlete experience strength that comes from eustress right before they enter a competition.

The opposite of eustress is distress. Some characteristic of distress are causing anxiety or concern, feel unpleasant, decrease in performance, perceived as outside of our coping abilities and it can lead to mental and physical problems. In today's challenging world, events that lead to distress can be found everywhere and at anytime for example financial problem, abused, conflict and interpersonal relationships, divorce and including children problem and conflict at school. Distress can be group into two which are acute stress (short term) and chronic stress (long term). Normally our body can recover from acute stress in a short time but stress that happened too often does not let the body recover and when this happen, acute stress may trigger an abnormal heartbeat which will lead to heart attacked for people who face heart problem. Chronic stress or long term stress may lead to serious health problem as it disrupts nearly every system in the body. Raise in blood pressure, suppress in immune system, increase in the risk of having heart attack and stroke, speed up the aging process, contribute to infertility and even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression are problems lead by long term stress.

The third category of stress is hyperstress which is the feeling that people tend to have when they are working beyond their limit of normal capacity. People suffering hyperstress normally do not really aware of it as they are living in a hectic environment and even has no time to think of their well being. Not on focusing on people with career, this sickness also applies to the first time mother because this mother are not really used to stresses and strain of motherhood. If the situation is leave without proper treatment, this will lead to postnatal depression which can arose danger to both mother and baby. Emotion run wild, smallest thing triggered a highly emotional response, break down or cry all of sudden and experience angry outburst are sign and symptoms of hyperstress.

Hypostress is differing to hyperstress. Hypostress is a stress brought by lack of self motivation or feeling of boredom. People that involved in unchallenging job and have to deal with the same kind of work over and over again, are the people that have high tendency to experience this stress as they find themselves lack of inspiration and motivation, have little thing to worry and always restless.
