What To Order At A Restaurant To Be Healthy

If you're trying to eat healthy, you probably know that it can be tough when you desire to eat out. See most restaurants do not show you how they make the food, how much calories the meal has, or what they add into it.

Some restaurants have replied to the demands for healthier food items on the menu and this includes even fast food restaurants. However, the choices on the menu are still limited and are not always the best tasting choice. So when you eat out, it's important to pay attention to the options you have and to make the healthiest choices you can.

You absolutely must take the initiative to eat as healthy as you can at a restaurant. There's no reason you shouldn't ask how a dish is made or what ingredients they use when cooking, if it doesn't state plainly on the menu. If the server isn't sure, ask them to ask the cook or chef. As many restaurants do, they should listen to you when it comes to how you want your food prepared. This is true for not just low fat requests but also low sodium, low sugar, and so on. They should want their customers to be happy!

Here are some extra hints to keep in mind when eating out and wanting to eat healthy as well:
When ordering aim for the ones that are baked, broiled, or grilled and try to stay away from the fried ones!

You watch your portion sizes at home, so why not when eating out? Ask for a half-order, or a child-size meal. Try not to eat dessert but if you do share and eat a small portion of it! With odering the meat meals, ask for leaner cuts.

For side dishes, steamed veggies are always healthier than just about anything. Most diets recommend them because they are low in fat and calories. Side that include cheese, butter or cream sauce are the worst choices or fried items for that matter.

Be sure to ask for fat free dressing when ordering a salad. Most restaurants have low fat or fat free salad dressings. If they inform you that they do not have any then ask for the original dressing on the side so you can watch how much you use.

Broth based soups are always better than creamy soups such as cream of broccoli. A vegetable soup is a healthy choice for an appetizer.

Forego the fries and opt for fresh fruit or a baked potato. Some restaurants menu will not show the substitutes, but then you can just ask for a alternate.

At italian restaurants many meal choices involve pastas, which requires you to choose your own sauce, opt for the tomato sauces rather than Alfredo or cream sauces. Pesto sauce is also good, especially without meat.

For Oriental dishes, steamed rice and stir fried vegetables are a good option. Heavy sauces should be voided and your meal should be prepared without heavy oil either. Select the meals that have more veggies than meat, or request the server for that option.

If you must have dessert, try a fruit salad or sorbet. And if you must have something else, share your portion with someone!

And fast food restaurants can be the worst alternatives for healthy eating, but if you do eat there remember to watch your portions. Your mind plays tricks when you see that getting more at the fast food restaurants are cheaper then smaller meals, but that's not always the important thing. And if you can find healthier alternatives to burgers and tacos such as salads and baked potatoes, choose those instead.

You should limit eating out, but this does not mean you need to entirely stop going out to eat, just keep up with what you eat. Whether it's your schedule or just something you enjoy doing, you don't need to give up restaurants to be healthy. Use these guidelines and some common sense and you can eat healthy even when eating out.
