Software: How it Affects Your Computer's Performance

Software is a broad term for any kind of data program or control that operates hardware. Most of the time, "software" is used to describe programs that you can install and run on your computer to perform various tasks-from professional or organizational tools, to games and leisurely activities. Generally, software is helpful and necessary for your computer. If, however, some software on your computer is faulty or malicious, it can have a debilitating effect on your computer.

Even if your hardware (the physical pieces that make up your computer) is brand new and well maintained, the software installed on it can greatly improve or deeply interfere with your computer's processing speed, as well as its ability to perform every task.

In fact, every piece of hardware, like your modem or printer, needs software, usually called a driver, in order for it to operate and recognize and work with the rest of your computer system. This means that if you bought a brand new modem and plugged it into your computer system, but didn't install the driver (or there was something wrong with the driver), you would not be able to use it! Any time software is installed incorrectly, corrupted in some way, or not compatible with your equipment, not only is your software useless, so is your hardware (until you get the software issue fixed)

Sometimes, hardware performs poorly because there is a software-related issue. Software can become corrupted or out of date, causing an unexpected loss of function in the hardware. If you don't know what caused your hardware to stop working, you might think you need to replace it. Of course, buying new hardware means you'll get new software, so that would probably fix the problem. But upgrading or reinstalling the software is often quick and easy, not to mention free or at least much less expensive.

You can save lots of time and money when you know how to properly troubleshoot hardware failures, as the problem often stems back to the software. Also, if you can keep your software upgraded consistently on your computer, you will probably improve your computer speed and efficiency.

This is especially good to know when you are connected to the Internet. In order for your computer to stay safe and keep up with Internet developments, it needs to have the right software and the software needs to be up to date. Many times, a slow Internet connection or problems with Internet downloads or page-loading is software related.

There is software in every element of your Internet services: the software running your computer, the software in your network adaptor, modem, router, wireless card, etc., the software program that displays, stores, and fetches Internet pages (i.e., Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.), and the web applications that allow sound, video, animation, and other features to work on webpages. Any one of those elements could be malfunctioning or out of date-which means that you would not be able to connect to Internet, or your browsing speed could be significantly slower than the connection speed you are paying for.

Understanding how your software works and keeping your Internet software up to date will help you get the most out of your computer and your Internet connection.
